Research Profile

Prof. du Plooy's research focuses on the church and the Kingdom of God, unity and diversity within a specific country and across the boundaries of race, language and ethnic groups. Recently he has focused more on the church-state relation, paying specific attention to the constitution and the church order.

Reformed church polity, concepts of church polity and the history of church polity as well as different systems in church polity, ecumenical relations and bodies, and the church order of the Reformation (1618-19).

Research Profile

Prof. Smit's research focuses on the position of clergy, especially the minister of religion’s juridical position in the so-called neutral or impartial state, as seen mainly by the church. His research themes also include the church's juridical position in modern society and the implications of International Human Rights Instruments for the church. He is a member of the South African Society of Church Polity.

Teaching Profile

Prof. Smit is currently serving in the ministry and continuing with his research as extraordinary senior lecturer of the Faculty of Theology of the North-West University.

Prof. Vorster's research focuses on political theologies: the ethics of human rights, political ethics, "Church, society and state", religious fundamentalism and human rights. He also gives advice to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Teaching Profile

He lectures on the ethical implications of the Ten Commandments, eco-ethics, bio-ethics, human dignity, ethical perspectives on human rights and contemporary moral issues in South Africa.

Research Profile

Prof. Vorster's is interested in Christian anthropology from a Reformed perspective and his research focuses on themes such as human rights, the relation between church and state, as well as human dignity, freedom and equality. He deals with these issues against the background of the new political dispensation in South Africa and the new challenges that South Africa faces.

Teaching Profile

Teaching includes courses on Science Theory and Introduction to Theology. The aim of these courses are to investigate the nature of science, the influence that philosophical trends in history have had on Christianity, the nature of theology as a science and the main premises of different theological traditions.

Research Profile

Practical theological research concentrates on ministering the Trinitarian model in the life and actions (praxis) of the church in the South African society. Research is conducted from the distinct pre-supposition that pneumatological faith perception is an important instrument in describing, explaining and changing reality in its coram Deo-context.

Teaching Profile

Teaching activites include facilitation in graduate as well as post-graduate programmes.
Introductory modules: Introduction to pastoral studies and preaching from a Reformed perspective.

Seminars: Seminar on the homiletic theme of preaching as crisis; Seminar on the Reformed tradition of house visitation as a Biblical model for individualized pastoral care.
