Research Profile

Prof. Drecoll's research focuses on Early Church History, especially the History of the Trinitarian Debate of the 4th century (Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa) and the Augustinian theology of grace and its historical context.  He is preparing a critical edition of Augustine's late works about grace as well as a bilingual Latin-German translation of all works of Augustine (edited together with J. Brachtendorf). A special project deals with the impact of Greek philosophy and theology for the Latin theology of the 4th century, starting from Marius Victorinus.

Teaching Profile

In Church History Prof. Drecoll teaches Medieval, Reformation and Modern history.  In Seminars, the main subjects are those of the Early Church History.  For graduates and doctoral students, there are special seminars and workshops, partially organized with colleagues from other historical or philological faculties.  These classes put a premium on a detailed analysis of the original sources; special assistance for doctoral students of foreign countries is supplied because English, German, French and Italian may be used in the seminars.
