Research Profile

My main interest is the religious history of the Mediterranean world and the Near East in late antiquity. In the history of early Christianity, I am focusing on esoteric and Gnostic trends as well as Manichaeism. My work also analyzes Jewish elements in various religious movements, such as the complex cultural relationship between Jews and Christians in late antiquity and in Byzantium.
In addition, a major epistemological interest of mine is the history of the modern study of religion.
